What Is an Atom Chemical Formula and All About Atom

What Is an Atom Chemical Formula

                    and All About Atom

An atom is defined as the smallest particle of an element that can exist.Atom are the building blocks of all matter.Atom are made up of positively charged particles called protons and negatively charged particle called electrons and neutral particles called neutron.

CONCEPT OF DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHERS ABOUT ATOM:

For many years, people wondered how matter is made up of.GREEK PHILOSOPHER believed that all matter was made up of four substances, namely earth, water, air, fire.ANCIENT CHINESE PHILOSOPHER believed that matter was made up of gold, wood, water, fire and earth.GREEK PHILOSOPHER named Democritus suggested that matter was made up of indivisible particles called atom. This came from Greek word "atomos" meaning "indivisible".He believed nothing could be smaller than an atom. However scientific experiment show that all matter is indeed made up of atoms. However they are different from DEMOCRITUS thought them to.

WHAT IS AN ATOM:

An atom is defined as the smallest particle of an element that can exist.Atom are the building blocks of all matter. All matter, living or nonliving,is made up of atoms.Atoms are so small that you cannot see them with an electron microscope. The atoms of different elements are different in sizes.

CONSIST OF:

Atom are made up of positively charged particles called protons and negatively charged particle called electrons and neutral particles called neutron.
Circles of various sizes and different symbols are used to represent atoms of different elements.
A chemical formula shows the number and kinds of atoms contained in each molecule.

FOR EXAMPLE:

1) Chemical formula of water is :H2O
Each molecule of water contains two ATOMS of hydrogen and one ATOM of oxygen, chwmically combined together.
2)How many atoms make up one molecule of chlorine gas,CL2 ?
Answer: Two atoms of chlorine (Cl2) 2 shows that their are two atoms in one molecule of chlorine

FACTS OF EARTH

 FACTS  OF EARTH
The Earth

Earth Planet Profile

Equatorial Diameter:12,756 km
Polar Diameter:12,714 km
Mass:5.97 x 10^24 kg
Moons:1 (The Moon)
Orbit Distance:149,598,262 km (1 AU)
Orbit Period:365.24 days
Surface Temperature:-88 to 58°C

1) Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the largest of the terrestrial planets. The Earth is the only planet in our solar system not to be named after a Greek or Roman deity. The Earth was formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago and is the only known planet to support life.

2) Earth is mostly iron, oxygen and silicon
If you could separate the Earth out into piles of material, you’d get 32.1 % iron, 30.1% oxygen, 15.1% silicon, and 13.9% magnesium. Of course, most of this iron is actually down at the core of the Earth. If you could actually get down and sample the core, it would be 88% iron. 47% of the Earth’s crust consists of oxygen.
3) -Earth doesn’t take 24 hours to rotate on its axis
It’s actually 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. This is the amount of time it takes for the Earth to completely rotate around its axis; astronomers call this a sidereal day. Now wait a second, that means a day is 4 minutes shorter than we think it is. You’d think that time would add up, day by day, and within a few months, day would be night, and night would be day.
4) -A year on Earth isn’t 365 days
It’s actually 365.2564 days. It’s this extra .2564 days that creates the need for leap years. That’s why we tack on an extra day in February every year divisible by 4 – 2004, 2008, etc – unless it’s divisible by 100 (1900, 2100, etc)… unless it’s divisible by 400 (1600, 2000, etc).

  • Earth has a powerful magnetic field.

  • This phenomenon is caused by the nickel-iron core of the planet, coupled with its rapid rotation. This field protects the Earth from the effects of solar wind.
